Santa Maria del Fiore Church or Il Duomo di Firenze was built between 1294-1418. In certain moments of its history, Giotto and Brunelleschi have been involved. Brunelleschi built the octogonal dom and Giotto the first storey of the Campanilla. He also supervised the whole work. In the interior there are works of art belonging to Donatello, Ghirlandaio, Uccello and many others.
In the San Giovanni Baptiserium have been baptised many members of the Medici family and Dante.
Palazzo Vecchio, in Piazza della Signoria, is now a museum, where one may see Machiavelli’s office. A copy of Michelangelo’s David may be seen in front of the fortress.
I also visited Galleria dell’Academia, with an important sculpture collection, San Lorenzo Church and Capela Medici, and the wonderful Santa Croce Church with the tombs of Michelanagelo and Dante.
A visit to Orsanmichele was also worthly, and Bargello offered me the opportunity to see the largest gothic and Rennaisance sculpture collection in Italy.
Last but not least, Ponte Vecchio, a very atmospheric place. May be you will ask: but Ufizzi Galleries? You are right! I was not there because of the long queu at the tickets and my limited time. I preferred to see the objectives I told you about, and to think that one day I will return to Florence.
I’ve never been there, and it’s a great mistake!
Lovely post:)
Even I have never been to Italy. All the pictures and descriptions are very good.
Wish you a very Happy New Year!
That would be a dream trip.
Ah the famous Santa Maria del Fiore church. I have a model of that lovely building in my living room!
Florence is an endless treasure monuments!
And many saw, in one day!
Beautiful photos!
many greetings
Tocmai citesc Agonie si Extaz si toate aceste cladiri din Florenta imi par atat de cunoscute desi nu am ajuns inca acolo. 🙂 Multumesc pentru aceste fotografii frumoase.
May be this is an idea for the coming year, Joo!
Happy New Year!
Thank you, Rama! May be 2012 will be an Italian tour for you!
Happy New Year to you and your lovely family!
You are right, Randy!
Happy New Year!
I’m glad, Duncan, for the pleasant surprise I’ve made to you!
Happy New Year to you and your lovely family!
All Italy is like this, Magda! It could be the target of many trips and holidays!
Happy New Year, my dear!
Hello, Traveling Hawk.
I was given many crops from your glorious works.
We are far distantly each other, but this human interchange has cultural significance.
Thank you for your heartwarming message and many visit, in this year.
I thank for your encouragement for Japan.
Healthy and Happy new years for you and yours.
Close spring, ruma ❀
Dear Ruma,
I also thank you for the kind words you left on my blog and for your wonderful posts on your own blog. I learned a lot about Japan, through them. I hgope we will keep in touch through blogging next year too.
Happy New Year!
Intersting reportage quite near home. Florence is only 100 Km from Livorno, we have been there for a day trip in early December.
Thank you for encouragement, VP!
Florence is such a gorgeous city with lovely architecture, colourful culture and wonderful people. i’d love to visit it again someday.
You are right, Life Ramblings. It’s a great place!
Nice place & photos. I was there in summer 2007 on a rail day trip from Rome. It wasn’t long enough as there was just enough time for a look around. The Duomo & Ponte Vecchio stood out for me.
I agree with you, J_on_tour. Florence needs more time.
